Raag-Ang Paddhati

The Raag-anga is a different perspective of looking at raags in Hindustani Music, based on various rules that characterise certain “base” raagas from which other derivative raagas are believed to have evolved. It is imprtant to note that this is not a sub-classification of the ten Thaats defined by Pt. Bhatkhande. Rather, they form a sort of a “web” where you find two raags belonging to the same thaat being classified under different raag-angas, and vice versa.

The 30-odd raag-angas defined, have been listed. We will take them up one by one and illustrate, with text and audio, how the different raagas belonging to an anga derive from the “base” raaga.

Raag-Angas
Bhairav Bilaval Kalyan Khamaj Kaafi
Poorvi Marwa Todi Asavari Bhairavi
Sarang Bhimpalas Lalat Piloo Sorat
Bibhas Nat Shree Bageshri Kedar
Shankara Kanada Malhar Hindol Bhoopali
Asaa Bihag Kamod Bhatiyar Durga

This is a “long term” project, and we will keep you updated on its progress. At the time of going to press, we have started with the raagas in the Kalyan anga, arguably one of the important cornerstones of Hindustani Raag Sangeet. Watch this space!
