Gharana never allows the haphazard presentation.
There are mainly 4 gharanas in Indian Classical Vocal Music which evolved from banis of the past. These are
1) Gwalior 2) Agra 3) Kirana 4) Jaipur
In addition to this, there are many other gharanas/styles, which are derivatives of Gwalior Gharana
To name a few: Patiyala, Rampur Seheswan, Bhendi Bajar, Mewati gharana, Delhi, Bakshu (Lucknow).
Patronage
Indian Classical musicians received royal patronage from below mentioned 'the then states' of India (before 1947).
